To me, Wangaratta is a hidden gem. I love it! I first chose it due to its relative proximity to ski fields, but once i visited the first time, i was in love. It is a good size regional centre, has an urban flair, but is immersed in its beautiful parks and bike paths to die for! Great as a hub to explore further out (wine and food, ski fields etc) but also lovely to. chill out by the rivers or some of its many creeks. I recommend a self guided walk around its historic buildings (pick up the map from Info centre), swim under the main bridge in summer, of course ride a bike, it's mostly flat and easy

We were in Wangaratta as a base for what essentially was a winery tour. Having access to wineries in every direction, together with a day trip to Beechworth meant that we remained refreshed and had access to everything we needed.. The town was easy to get around and traffic wasn't a problem. We dined in town a couple of times and found the standard of food and the surrounds very good.
